Brief Biography
I am a specialist in classical and critical phenomenology (Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Fanon, Beauvoir, Ahmed), with particular attention to their intersections with the human sciences (especially archaeology and geography). My research concerns, first, how social and political values become embedded in material culture, the material environment, and the material body, and, second, how those values impact the human subject's orientation in, and experience of, space. I teach broadly in the history of (European, American, and Africana) philosophy, primarily from the 18th century to the present, and maintain an active interest in the history and philosophy of linguistics (having earned an MA in Theoretical Linguistics at University College London before returning to Philosophy for my PhD).
Current Work:
I am in the early phases of a book project that reconstructs the idea of a "transcendental geology" in the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, as well as accompanying articles on his method of "vertical history" and his relationship to land-based Indigenous American philosophies. I also have forthcoming book chapters on Fanon's critical geography; on the concept of "sedimentation" in Husserl and Fanon; on Beauvoir's engagements with the natural sciences; and on metaphors of slavery and containment in the philosophy of the emotions. The latter centers on the work of Saidiya Hartmann and Ralph Ellison. For more of my writing, see here: https://csun.academia.edu/RobinMuller
