Brief Biography

Peter J. García grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is Professor of World Music Studies, Chicana/o/x and U.S. Latin/o Borderlands Folklore, Performance and Cultural Studies. His social justice research and auto-ethnography in Greater Mexico and his specialization is in the Northern New Mexican and Río Grande borderlands musics and cultures. García works closely with Hilos Culturales - a non-profit regional academy generating regional Hispanicist, literary, music and cultural studies pedagogy and curriculum from throughout Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. García's social justice research, publications and teaching in native Pueblo Indian environmental activism and water rights and Indo-Hispanx/Greater Mexican land grant struggles has benefitted from a close working relation with Chela Sandoval. He attends TEWA Women United (TWU) annual Gathering for Mother Earth and is grateful for the indigenous land, water, and sound based knowledges learned through sharing, reciprocity and participation in ceremony. García's Journal articles, book and music reviews appear in Ethnomusicology, Latin American Music Review, and the Journal of American Indian Culture and Research. Forthcoming is "Latin/o Music in North America" in Oxford Bibliographies and his monograph Decolonizing Enchantment: Echoes of Nuevo Mexicano Popular Musics (UNM Press).
