Catherine Del Castillo
Lecturer
Faculty - National Ctr on Deafness
Brief Biography
Catherine ‘Cass’ DelCastillo has been a member of the California State University, Northridge/Deaf Studies ‘tribe’ and community freelance interpreter since 1987. Her deep connection to the Deaf Community and desire for equality and equanimity for all beings naturally led her into mentoring and teaching roles; first as a mentor at CSUN/NCOD, then as Professional Development Specialist for a video relay company, and finally back to CSUN as a Part Time Instructor. In recent years Cass has found that her ‘meditation/yoga/mindfulness’ practice which emphasizes daily introspection; sitting with ‘what is’, being the conscious observer of our lives, to be a lovely compliment to her professional commitment of continuously unpacking her privileges and biases in the workplace. It is her deepest joy and honor to rally and equip aspiring young interpreters to do the same.
In her spare time you will find Cass exploring the world; especially being near the seas, communing with ancient trees, and being delighted by art and poetry. Cass is also studying to become a certified Animal Communicator.
