Brief Biography
Dr. Ashley Benjamin is a part-time lecturer in the Elementary Education Department at CSUN. Dr. Benjamin began her career in education as a classroom teacher at elementary and middle schools in LAUSD. She then served in leadership roles as an Intervention Coordinator, Categorical Programs Advisor, and Assistant Principal. Since 2017 she has been the Principal of a diverse Title I PreK-5 elementary school in SMMUSD. As Principal she has led the school to large academic gains and to state and national recognition such as the CDE 2022 CA Pivotal Practice Award for innovation and exceptional practices during Distance Learning. Dr. Benjamin's undergraduate and graduate academic studies were grounded in multiculturalism and critical reflection on contemporary social issues to support diverse learners in urban school settings. At USC her Dissertation was a unique action plan project supporting a local school district in Closing the Achievement Gap for Latinx English Language Learners, and her Master's Thesis on the Biracial Student Experience was awarded Outstanding Research in Education by CSULB.
